ABOUT:
Freeze, Fives, Saves Lives!

For decades, communities have been instructing children to “Stop, Drop and Roll” should they encounter a fire. Similarly, children need to be taught the proper protocol to have a positive interaction with law enforcement.

This book explains the role of police officers and provides a behavior tool in the form of a fun, easy to remember phrase, all through a light-hearted conversation among three young friends.

The story unfolds when a police officer interrupts the children’s discussion, and Jared expresses his fear and desire to run.  Tyler quickly explains that the officer is his father and there is no need to be afraid. Tyler’s dad gets to the bottom of Jared’s fear, explains why it is misguided, and how to properly respond to an officer. The friends have fun practicing the mantra “Freeze, Fives, Saves Lives!”

Message From the Author

As a secondary English teacher, I have worked in several east side districts in and around Detroit. Throughout the years, I have witnessed countless students respond with a fight or flight mentality when confronted by school security and resource officers. Their behavior is often defensive and could lead to dire consequences if they acted the same way when talking with a police officer outside of school. It occurred to me that the responses I was seeing in school hallways are the very ones that make headlines resulting in the death/injury of a civilian or an officer. I realized that we don’t do enough as a society to teach people the appropriate way to respond to law enforcement, which is what inspired the idea for this book.

By teaching children at a young age the proper way to an interact with a police officer, we can create muscle memory that will hopefully guide their behavior as adults.  I feel confident that by instilling the simple phrase, "Freeze, Fives, Saves Lives!" into young minds, potential misunderstandings and negative encounters later in life could be prevented. I hope you find these tools helpful in forming positive, productive relationships with students today that will promote respect, trust and equity in the future!
